On November 7, 2024, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences hosted the 9th E-Government University Day, followed by the graduation ceremony for the E-Government degree programme. The event, centred around the theme "Transformation through AI: How intelligent should public administration be?" and brought together over 220 participants from academia, public administration, and business. A highlight of the event was the participation of Ina Scharrenbach, Minister for Home Affairs, Local Government, Construction, and Digitalization of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, who emphasized the crucial role of qualified young professionals for the digital transformation in public administration in her opening speech.

Bringing Visions to Life: Hochschule Rhein-Waal and St. Bernhard Hospital Launch Joint Projects
The Faculty of Communication and Environment at Hochschule Rhein-Waal and St. Bernhard Hospital in Kamp-Lintfort have agreed to strengthen their collaboration to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice. This partnership is part of the "Center for Assistive Technologies" project, funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), and aims to create new opportunities for leveraging local resources in innovative projects.

Organized by Miriam Drazek and René König, both research associates in the LabLandschaften team, the event provided a platform for exchange and networking. The fifth company evening at the Rhine-Waal University will take place on September 10, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Green FabLab on the Kamp-Lintfort campus and focus on a technology that is not only hotly debated but also widely used in various applications – Artificial Intelligence.

In June 2024, Inge de Bo (Ghent University, scientific coordinator of the EU-FarmBook project), Eduard Mauri (European Forest Institute, project partner of EU-FarmBook), and Daniela Lud (Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, coordinator of the impact activities of the EU-FarmBook project) received the prestigious ENLIGHT Impact Ambassador Award. This honour, which comes with a prize of 5000 euros, recognizes outstanding contributions under the main theme "Digital Revolution and the Impact of Digitalization."

Bridging Courses at the Faculty of Communication and Environment

The 5th Ethics Day at Rhine-Waal University on June 5, 2024, will explore how we can take action on a personal and regional level to address the diverse challenges of the poly-crisis. Through expert presentations and interactive workshops, participants will collaborate to develop solutions aimed at making a positive contribution to crisis management.
The showcase, organized by the Information and Communication Design, B.A., and Design and Interaction, M.A., programmes, will highlight first-semester projects alongside select works from the previous winter semester as part of a meetup. The exhibition will kick off with an opening event on Friday, May 3rd, 2024, 3 pm, at the Schirrhof in Kamp-Lintfort. Following the opening event, the exhibition will remain open on Saturday and Sunday. Everyone interested is warmly invited to drop by!

Since winter semester 2023/24, Professor Nicolas Markwald und Professor Dr Matteo Große-Kampmann have been supporting the team of professors at the Faculty of Communication and Environment.
Great weather and a sold-out event welcomed the team of the Faculty of Communication and Environment on September 9, 2023, at Airport Weeze. Nine members and friends of the faculty took on the challenge of a six-kilometre run and 17+ obstacles.
Impulses from various projects were presented. Afterwards, representatives of companies and communities were able to exchange ideas with researchers. Another business evening in November will focus on the topic of the environment.
An app for better orientation, a Red Panda as a chat GBT or an audio guide that uses GPS coordinates to play texts about the animals – supervised by Professor Ido Iurgel, students from the Faculty of Communication and Environment have impressively demonstrated how digital applications can make a zoo visit even more exciting.
As part of the course "Methods and Tools of Modern Astronomy", students from the Faculty of Communication and Environment went on two exciting excursions led by Dr Monika Marx-Zimmer and Prof Frank Zimmer. One of them took them to the Effelsberg radio telescope, the second-largest fully mobile radio telescope in the world. There they gained exciting insights into the history, construction and functioning of the impressive instrument.
Radio telescope of Rhine-Waal University put into operation
The new radio telescope at Rhine-Waal University is not only a valuable resource for the education of students but also offers opportunities for exciting research and collaboration with renowned institutions. With the support of experts from the Astropeiler Stockert Association - especially Dr. Wolfgang Herrmann and Thomas Buchsteiner - as well as PD Dr. habil. Jürgen Kerp from the University of Bonn, the radio telescope was finally put into operation on the Kamp-Lintfort campus on June 12th, and the first test measurements were carried out.
A project supported by the ZBW - Leibniz Information Center for Economics at Rhine-Waal University enables the "European Journal of Economics and Economic Policies: Intervention (EJEEP)" to be published as Diamond Open Access starting from the first issue of this year. This means that the journal is freely accessible to readers. All previous issues from the past 19 volumes can now also be read without any paywall restrictions.
Rhine-Waal University and Fitchburg State University deepen collaboration
Rhine-Waal University and Fitchburg State University have further expanded their collaboration. Prof. Dr. Sanjay Kaul, Professor of Engineering Technology, visited the Faculty of Communication and Environment from June 9th to June 19th to strengthen cooperation in the field of renewable energy and sustainability.
The Faculty of Communication and Environment bids farewell to long-standing staff members
On June 21, 2023, the Faculty of Communication and Environment said goodbye to two long-serving members of staff, Professor Dr Anja von Richthofen and Mr. Ralf Postulka, who have worked with great commitment for the education of students and the development of the university since the early days. The official farewell was characterised by gratitude, appreciation and a farewell mood.
The Nitrate Scouts project team develops and tests educational modules on the topic of nitrate in groundwater in cooperation with various stakeholders. On a visit to Haus Riswick, agricultural business management students from the Kleve Technical College for Agricultural Economics got the chance to apply new teaching materials that had been developed by the project team and formulate suggestions.
The symposium "Working with newcomers/ Samenwerken met nieuwkomers" on June 7, 2023, met with an enthusiastic response. Initiated by the Samenwerkingsverband Burgerkracht Europa (SBE), a network of organisations to which Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is an associate partner, the event comprised a total of 14 workshops as well as panel discussions, in which lighthouse projects on important topics relating to welcome spaces and the integration of newcomers were presented.
Interested visitors and brilliant weather on Open Day
On Saturday, June 3rd, 2023, the Faculty of Communication and Environment invited all those interested in studying or just curious to the Open Campus Day. The varied, informative programme, the numerous hands-on activities and not least the sunny weather attracted numerous visitors to the campus in Kamp-Lintfort.
As part of the KLIMA.PROFIT NRW project, six companies from the districts of Kleve and Wesel visited Rhine-Waal University to take part in a workshop. The KLIMA.PROFIT NRW project is a model project co-financed by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia that supports companies in an advisory process to acquire competence in dealing with climate change.
Europe is one of the central topics to the anniversary year of Kloster Kamp and will now be addressed in a panel discussion on Europe Day, 09 May 2023, organised by the city of Kamp-Lintfort and held on the University's campus.
Fairtrade Student Group joins Change Fashion campaign
The Fairtrade Student Group of Rhine-Waal University supports the Change Fashion campaign which is part of Fashion Revolution Week. It commemorates the Rana Plaza disaster of 24 April 2013, in which the collapse of a garment factory killed 1,134 people and injured more than 2,500 others. Infos

Nitrate Scouts - Workshop at the Solidarity Farm on the TINThof
As part of the Rheinberg Sustainability and Mobility Weeks, interested citizens took the opportunity to join a bicycle excursion to the Lower Rhine Solidarity Farm on the TINThof in Voerde/Spellen.

"EU FarmBook": EUREKA presents knowledge database that is unique in Europe
21 organizations from 15 countries - The "EU FarmBook" pools expertise on agricultural and rural knowledge from all over Europe in one single database. The EUREKA research group invites all interested parties to join the presentation of the pilot version of the new online knowledge resource on Wednesday, March 16 and Thursday, March 17, 2022, both from 11am to 12pm, aiming to get feedback for future improvements.

GameLet: Promoting reading fluency in secondary schools
Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, together with partners in Germany and Europe, has developed Gamelet, a brand new learning software designed to improve the reading fluency of secondary school pupils. Using a media-based, multilingual approach in combination with gamification elements, GameLet will help address deficits in reading skills, multilingualism and media integration. Supervised by Professor Dr. Dirk Bruckmann and Professor Dr. jur. Dieter Kopetz, students of the Faculty of Communication and Environment visited the European Parliament in Brussels and presented their "EU Data Protection App". Some EU member states have already shown great interest.
Due to the successful cooperation with students of the faculty in 2018, the ALTANA Group had again invited students to cooperate in an interdisciplinary project. In January, the second project team presented its results on the topic "Green Logistics - Reducing ALTANA's CO2 Footprint".

1st place and within top 10: Two Rhine-Waal students successful in design competition of the Frankfurt Book Fair
Im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten zu 775 Stadt Kleve hat die Städtische Singgemeinde am vergangenen Samstag, den 10. Juni 2017, zu einem besonderen Konzert in die Stadthalle Kleve eingeladen: unter Mitwirkung von 150 Sängerinnen und Sängern und einem 55-köpfigen Orchester wurde Carl Orffs "Carmina Burana" aufgeführt. Eine besondere Unterstützung erfuhr das Konzert durch Studierende der Hochschule Rhein-Waal.
Student team wins NRW final of the "Accenture Campus Innovation Challenge“
The interdisciplinary team of the Faculty of Communication and Environment won against other teams from Hamburg, Cologne and Meschede and brought their victory back to Kamp-Lintfort. With their winning project of a computer-generated secretary, the team will now enter the international final with teams from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. All members of Rhine-Waal University will keep their fingers crossed.

Dr Frank Zimmer, Professor at the Faculty of Communication and Environment, invited primary school kids of ‘Schule am Pappelsee’ to join a very special kind of lecture.
Professor Dr Frank Zimmer has been recognized as one of the best professors in Germany. UNICUM BERUF, a popular magazine for university graduates in Germany, has selected him as the second best Professor of the Year 2016 for the category ’Engineering / Computer Science’.
The project starts with a survey on regional purchasing behaviour carried out in the city center and on the weekly markets of the different districts in Moers.

285 designs from a total of 19 universities were submitted to the 2016 ‘Wettbewerb für junge Gestalter’ design competition organised by the Frankfurt Book Fair. Student Alexander Altrichter’s design was one of ten selected for destinction by the jury.
