A fantastic day full of interactions, inspiration – and a real appetite for more science
On Saturday, 14 June 2025, the Faculty of Communication and Environment opened its doors to prospective students, families, children and curious minds from across the region – all under clear blue skies and in the heat of a high-summer day. Lots of visitors made their way to Kamp-Lintfort – and were rewarded with a varied programme, great vibes and plenty of cool refreshments to beat the heat.
From 11 am to 4 pm, our faculty showed once again how diverse and exciting it can be. Whether it was campus tours, interactive activities, course showcases or creative workshops, there was plenty to discover, try out and get curious about. Lots of visitors took the chance to explore research and teaching up close: in the Usability Lab, for instance, they tested out modern human-machine interactions, or jumped into virtual worlds via 3D scans. The FabLab also drew a crowd with its hands-on approach to innovation and creativity. Across campus, lecture halls, labs and workshops welcomed guests – like the AIS Lab, which gave insights into practical research on assistive tech for older adults and digital tools for reading support, highlighting how research here connects directly to real life.
A big hit with the younger crowd was the Children’s University in the Audimax. Two fun and engaging talks brought psychology and science to life, with lots of laughter, wide eyes and experiments along the way. Kids learned about feelings, colours, plants – and just how exciting learning can be.
Meanwhile, the courtyard was buzzing with energy: there was a Latino dance workshop from uni sports, games and crafts for all ages, a Lego challenge, the Fairtrade team’s stalls, plus a chance to explore the world of mobility and logistics through hands-on activities. There was no shortage of things to do or learn.
Great vibes were everywhere – thanks not only to our amazing staff and students, but also to live music and tasty snacks and drinks that helped everyone cool off and recharge on a hot summer day.
With colourful stalls, inspiring chats and lots of smiling faces, the campus really came to life. “Today showed just how open, passionate and diverse our faculty is,” said Dean Prof. Dr Hegemann. “And how much joy there is in sharing knowledge. It’s fantastic to see so many people taking an interest in our university and in the topics shaping the future. Nothing beats real conversations.”
The takeaway for many: science isn’t dry or dull – it’s hands-on, creative, colourful and for everyone, whatever your age.
A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success. We can’t wait to welcome you again – if not sooner, then at the next Open Day!
