The end of throwaway logic? Prof. Simone Pauling on the true dimension of the circular economy

A student at the Faculty of Life Sciences in Kleve, pursuing a degree in "Qualität, Umwelt, Sicherheit und Hygiene" (Quality, Environment, Safety, and Hygiene), she sought an experience that would broaden her horizons. That opportunity came in the form of a semester abroad at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) for the academic year 2023/2024.  CSUMB, founded in 1994, is one of the newer universities in the California State University system, built on the site of the former Fort Ord. This relatively young institution offered Ellen a dynamic environment for her exchange. "I wanted to experience a different approach to education, to see how sciences were taught outside of Germany," she explained. On a rainy February morning, the cold of the Lower Rhine swept through the streets of Kleve, but anyone entering the Tropical House at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences immediately left winter behind. A different climate prevailed here: moist, warm air settled on the skin, while the earthy scent of plants and damp leaves filled the room. Over two days, three seventh-grade classes from Willibrord High School - ninety pupils in total - curiously wandered through the dense greenery, between towering banana trees and lush cocoa trees, to listen to the words of horticulturalist Doris Winkels. Their school trip was an expedition into a living classroom, an encounter with an ecosystem that lies thousands of kilometers away and yet is of crucial importance in the reality of their lives.
