The drop of truth in cooking oil

Kilian Visser has developed a highly innovative method for his master's thesis in the Food Science degree programme that can be used to quickly and precisely detect adulteration in vegetable edible oils. For this work, which can make a decisive contribution to consumer protection, the young scientist has now been honoured with the Heinrich Stockmeyer Foundation's Young Scientist Award 2025. His research combines Raman spectroscopy with machine learning and enables the authentication of adulterated olive oil with impressive accuracy. Congratulations!

Almost 120 graduates of the Faculties Life Sciences and Technology and Bionics received their certificates during the traditional graduation ceremony.

Prof. Dr. William Megill and Prof. Dr. Peter Simon hosted the ceremony and welcomed 600 guests - some of them couldn't even find a place in the completely filled Audimax but had the option to watch a live stream of the event in another room. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Kisters, Vice President for Research, Transfer and Innovation congratulated the former students on behalf of the presidium. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Masuch (faculty of Technology and Bionics) and Prof. Dr. Peter Scholz (Dean of the faculty of Life Sciences) encouraged them to stay in contact with their former university. Read more.

Award for excellent Master's degree: Graduate prize awarded in the Master's programme in Health Sciences and Management

The graduate prize of 1,000 euros was awarded for outstanding academic achievement in the Master's programme in Health Sciences and Management.

The new Dean's Office of the Faculty of Life Sciences

The end of throwaway logic? Prof. Simone Pauling on the true dimension of the circular economy

In Germany, the concept of the circular economy is often reduced to a single element. Most people think of waste separation and recycling at the end of the product life cycle. Prof Dr Simone Pauling from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences recently made it clear at the Forum Mittelstand Niederrhein that this is a clear abbreviation of a far more comprehensive concept. Her impulse: The circular economy is a systemic issue that begins long before the waste bin and must realign the entire value chain. Read more.

Martin Willing (left), chef and award-winning graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme in Quality, Environment, Safety and Hygiene (QUSH) at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, is enrolled on the Master's degree programme in Food Science. Despite his success in the catering industry, he made a conscious decision to switch to the academic world. For his outstanding bachelor's thesis on the influence of glucose syrup colouring on fruit gums, he was awarded the prize for the best QUSH bachelor graduate of his year by the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences Sponsors' Association and the Unternehmerschaft Niederrhein, represented by Dr. Ralf Wimmer (pictured right).
