‘Quality, environment, safety and hygiene‘ - Student Ellen Thomas abroad in California: A semester at the Bay

Ellen Thomas had always envisioned her education as something without borders. A student at the Faculty of Life Sciences in Kleve, pursuing a degree in "Qualität, Umwelt, Sicherheit und Hygiene" (Quality, Environment, Safety, and Hygiene), she sought an experience that would broaden her horizons. That opportunity came in the form of a semester abroad at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) for the academic year 2023/2024.  CSUMB, founded in 1994, is one of the newer universities in the California State University system, built on the site of the former Fort Ord. This relatively young institution offered Ellen a dynamic environment for her exchange. "I wanted to experience a different approach to education, to see how sciences were taught outside of Germany," she explained. "The moment I learned I could study abroad without delaying my graduation, I started planning.”. Read more.

Submerged in tropical greenery: pupils at Willibrord-Gymnasium experience the diversity of the rainforest up close

On a rainy February morning, the cold of the Lower Rhine swept through the streets of Kleve, but anyone entering the Tropical House at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences immediately left winter behind. A different climate prevailed here: moist, warm air settled on the skin, while the earthy scent of plants and damp leaves filled the room. Over two days, three seventh-grade classes from Willibrord High School - ninety pupils in total - curiously wandered through the dense greenery, between towering banana trees and lush cocoa trees, to listen to the words of horticulturalist Doris Winkels. Their school trip was an expedition into a living classroom, an encounter with an ecosystem that lies thousands of kilometers away and yet is of crucial importance in the reality of their lives. From chef to academic

Martin Willing (left), chef and award-winning graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme in Quality, Environment, Safety and Hygiene (QUSH) at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, is enrolled on the Master's degree programme in Food Science. Despite his success in the catering industry, he made a conscious decision to switch to the academic world. For his outstanding bachelor's thesis on the influence of glucose syrup colouring on fruit gums, he was awarded the prize for the best QUSH bachelor graduate of his year by the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences Sponsors' Association and the Unternehmerschaft Niederrhein, represented by Dr. Ralf Wimmer (pictured right).
