The HSRW DataSustain Lab at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) offers an innovative environment for research, teaching, and societal engagement, focusing on open data, environmental data, and sustainability. The lab aims to bring together expertise from diverse disciplines to develop data-driven solutions for local and regional challenges.

At its core is the processing and analysis of environmental and open data, considered within a holistic, interdisciplinary framework. The lab serves as a practice-oriented space for learning and research – a hub for students, researchers, and external partners working collaboratively on sustainable projects.

Mission
The DataSustain Lab combines data science methodologies with domain-specific knowledge to develop innovative and sustainable solutions. In interdisciplinary teams, data from various sources is analysed, contextualised using modern technologies such as machine learning, and translated into scientifically sound, practice-oriented insights.

Research Focus Areas

  • More efficient use of open data: Applying innovative data science methods to enhance the analysis of available data and to support local monitoring of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Integration of complex data sources: Merging data with varying temporal and spatial scales to derive new, scientifically grounded insights.
  • Preservation and processing of historical data: Identifying, digitising, and utilising valuable data sets from obsolete media using modern technologies to ensure long-term accessibility and analysis.
  • Citizen science: Involving the public in data collection to promote participatory research.
