Programme structure and content
The Sustainable Tourism (BA) degree programme prepares students for a wide range of career paths in the national and international labour market.
These include, for example:
- organisations working in the fields of climate justice, sustainable tourism development, environmental protection and urban development
- tourism promotion and planning in towns and local authorities
- the hotel and catering industry
- Service providers for tourism infrastructure
- Travel, trade fair and event organisers
- Management consultancies specialising in tourism
- Setting up a tourism business
Semesters 1–2: Fundamentals of Tourism and Sustainability
- Learn the fundamentals of sustainability, tourism and economics, as well as current global trends.
Semesters 3–5: Advanced study and specialisation
- Work on case studies, projects, interdisciplinary courses, field trips and compulsory elective modules to tailor your academic profile to your individual interests.
6th semester: Practical and study abroad semester
- Gain valuable professional experience during an Internship semester or broaden your horizons with a semester abroad.
7th semester: Bachelor’s thesis & Colloquium
- Undertake your own research project and present the results in a final Colloquium.

To enrol on a Bachelor’s degree programme, you will usually need a qualification giving you access to higher education: a general university entrance qualification, a subject-specific university entrance qualification or a university of applied sciences entrance qualification (comprising both academic and practical components).
To apply for our Bachelor’s degree programmes, you need proof of English language proficiency at B2 level. We accept a German Abitur certificate or Fachabitur certificate as proof of B2 level. All applications from students with an international school education require one of the following language certificates. If you are unsure whether your certificate is valid, please contact our Student Advisory Service – we will be happy to help.
You will also need proof of a pre-study work placement lasting at least 8 weeks, to be submitted no later than the time of re-enrolment for the 4th semester (further details are set out in the relevant examination regulations).
Ideally, the pre-study placement should be directly related to tourism. In certain cases, a placement in the fields of business or sustainability is also acceptable. Whether the placement ultimately meets the subject-specific requirements will be finally assessed and evaluated by the Examination Board
Tourism is one of the world’s most important economic sectors, and the desire to travel continues to grow. At the same time, issues such as sustainability, digitalisation, climate change and new mobility concepts are coming increasingly into focus. That is why there is an urgent need for qualified professionals.
On the Sustainable Tourism degree programme, you will learn to understand the opportunities and challenges of tourism from a holistic perspective. You will explore sustainable development, economic and legal principles, as well as social and environmental issues.
In doing so, you will develop practical solutions to current challenges and gain in-depth knowledge of global trends in tourism, sustainability and digitalisation. This will ensure you are optimally prepared for a career in a forward-looking industry.
The field trip offers the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, to critically analyse tourism and sustainable tourism development at a local level, to discuss various aspects of destination management, to assess complex challenges and conflicts of interest among stakeholders, and to use critical thinking to analyse materials and develop presentations and reports setting out appropriate management strategies
Application process
This degree programme has open admission, which means you will automatically be admitted once you have submitted your online application. Your Letter of Admission and all the important information regarding Enrolment will be available to you on Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences Application portal.
You only accept your place on the course once you have officially completed enrolment following your admission. As soon as you have been successfully enrolled, you will be notified by email.
Did you complete your school-leaving qualifications outside of Germany? If so, you’ll need to apply via uni-assist. The platform will guide you step by step through the application process. Your documents will then be checked by uni-assist and, provided you meet the admission requirements, forwarded to Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences for a final decision and the issuance of a decision letter. You will then be informed by email.
