Once again, pupils in Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort had the opportunity to get a glimpse into everyday student life at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
Since 2010, young people interested in university life have been able to attend lectures at the university during the autumn and Easter school holidays. This gives them an opportunity to get a taste of student life after leaving school.
A total of 115 different open lectures were attended by over 100 participants in the taster programme during the 2017 Easter holidays. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of places, it was not possible to accommodate everyone who was interested. However, there will be another opportunity to attend lectures at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences during the autumn holidays in 2017.
For the first time, as part of this year’s taster programme at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, a combination of an English-language lecture on ‘Thermodynamics’ by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Gebel, Professor of Process Engineering and Thermodynamics, followed by a workshop on ‘Building a Stirling Engine’. A basic understanding of thermodynamics is essential for engineers to design and build effective machines and systems. Co-ordinated by the zdi Centre in the District of Kleve, cleverMINT, secondary school pupils were given the opportunity, following the introductory lecture, to build a Stirling engine from tin cans on their own. The pupils were delighted to take the engines they had built home with them for further experimentation.
