Students from the Recycling and Sustainability courses, accompanied by Prof. Dr.-Ing Raimund Sicking, gained practical insights into the topic of recycling during two field trips.
Another excursion took the students to Neuss to visit AluNorf, the world’s largest aluminium smelter and rolling mill, which produces around 1.5 million tonnes of rolled aluminium annually. Here, too, the tour focused on recycling. Some of the aluminium processed at the plant comes from the recycling centre, which smelts aluminium scrap. Here, the students learnt that recycling requires only around 5 per cent of the energy that would be needed to produce new aluminium from bauxite.
