Health Sciences and Management, MSc

As a graduate, you will be ideally qualified for leadership and management roles in a wide range of organisations within the healthcare sector. Typical career paths include occupational health management (BGM) and external BGM providers, clinics and hospitals, health and private health insurance companies, as well as local and public health services. You will also be in high demand as a specialist in nutrition and consumer advice, health journalism, health-oriented exercise promotion and health tourism.

• 1st semester: You will begin with modules such as Health Economics, Health Tourism/Environment and Health, Innovation Management, and Health Promotion and Prevention. This is complemented by learning research methods and undertaking your first ‘Applied Research Project’.
• 2nd semester: Here you will deepen your management and specialist knowledge in the modules Occupational Health Management, Nutrition, European Health Systems and Policy, Ethics in Healthcare, and Healthcare Business Management. Building on this, you will undertake the ‘Applied Research Project 2’.
• 3rd semester: Your final semester is entirely reserved for your Master's thesis and the final Colloquium.

As the Master’s programme is designed to be a very intensive three-semester full-time course, there is no dedicated, extended Internship semester as there is in the Bachelor’s programme. Nevertheless, practical experience is deeply embedded in the programme: through the two ‘Applied Research Project’ modules, you will work closely with research laboratories or external partners from industry. There is also an important prerequisite: by the time you register your Master's thesis, you must provide evidence of relevant practical experience (at least 20 weeks) or a Semester abroad, unless you have already completed this during your Bachelor’s degree. If necessary, a Semester abroad can easily be fitted in as a supplementary component.

To start this Master’s programme with us, you will need a relevant first degree (Bachelor’s) in the fields of health sciences, natural sciences or economics.

• Good final grade: Your Bachelor’s degree must have been awarded an overall grade of at least ‘Good’ (2.5) or ‘A’/‘B’.
• Prior subject knowledge: You must demonstrate a total of at least 20 ECTS credits in the fields of chemistry/physiology, health promotion/occupational health and safety, biology/anatomy and economics. Any missing modules (up to 30 ECTS credits, e.g. for a 6-semester Bachelor’s degree) may be made up via a Learning Agreement.
• Practical experience: By the time you register your Master's thesis at the latest, you must provide evidence of at least 20 weeks of relevant practical work in health sciences or a Semester abroad.
• Language: As the degree programme is taught in German, international applicants must provide a language certificate at level B2. The degree programme has no entry restrictions (no minimum grade requirement).

Yes, you can easily study the Master’s degree programme in Health Sciences and Management, M.Sc., on a part-time basis (whilst working). In accordance with Section 62a(2) of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (HG NRW), the degree programme is explicitly designed for this Mode of study.

In the part-time option, you continue to work in your profession alongside your studies, which is why the Standard duration of study is extended from three to a total of six semesters. To ensure you can balance your studies and work effectively, the course content of the first two full-time semesters is spread across your first four part-time semesters. During this phase, you will typically set aside two days a week for on-campus classes at the university, leaving you with three full days for your professional work. In the 5th and 6th semesters of study, you will then devote yourself entirely to your Master's thesis.
