As part of the Children’s University at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the next lecture in the 2019/2020 winter semester will focus on the topic of ‘children’s rights’.
Rights are one of the most important pillars of a democratic society. Children, however young or small they may be, have rights within society. They are entitled to, and should be allowed to, have a say in matters and issues that affect them. However, there are many obstacles to children’s participation and the enforcement of children’s rights. Awareness of these rights is often insufficient, both amongst adults and amongst the children themselves. Sometimes adults believe that children do not yet have opinions of their own and therefore cannot make the right decisions. Or the children do not know how to express their ideas and wishes.
In this talk with Kevin Brandt, a research assistant at the Faculty of Society and Economics at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, the children will learn about their rights. Through a game, they will work together to discover what rights they have as children and how they can exercise them.
The event will take place on 27 November 2019 from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm at the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Marie-Curie-Straße 1, 47533 Kleve, in the Lecture Theatre Centre, Building 01, Room 01 02 006 (Seminar Room 3). Admission is free and no registration is required.
The Children’s University
Through the Children’s University, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences offers children aged between eight and twelve the opportunity to develop a passion for the world of science through lectures (45 minutes) designed especially for them. Just like proper students, they are given student ID cards. They sit in lecture theatres and can ask the experts as many questions as they like. The big difference from a proper degree course is that there are no exams to sit.
