This event format offers interested members of the public a ‘workshop’ for engaging with the university. To this end, venues in the city centre and publicly accessible spaces, such as cafés or community centres, are chosen as event locations.
Academics from the university come down from the campus into the city to engage in dialogue between society and academia, together with experts from the region. The focus is on engaging conversation and lively discussion on topics of social relevance. The idea for ‘DenkWerkStadt’ originated as part of the NUCLEUS project at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, in collaboration with the Centre for Research, Innovation and Transfer (ZFIT) at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
The next ‘DenkWerkStadt’, taking place on 9 October 2019 from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm, will focus on the topic of plastic. From garden chairs to microplastics: our environment is littered with plastic waste of all sizes. Images of beaches and railway embankments that resemble rubbish dumps are everywhere, and in the oceans, plastic waste is gathering to form huge floating islands.
Professor Dr Christoph Heß, Professor of Non-Metallic Materials at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, will explore how these plastics end up in the environment and what recycling and disposal options are available for plastic waste. He will also provide an overview of bioplastics. Together with members of the public, the discussion will focus on whether we actually need such vast quantities of such a wide variety of plastic products in our everyday lives.
