Innovative, Interdisciplinary, International – this is once again the theme of this year’s semester project at our faculty. Around 300 students from the third and fifth semesters of the STEM Bachelor’s degree programmes in ‘Mechanical Engineering’, ‘Industrial Engineering’, ‘Mechatronic Systems Engineering’, ‘Electronics’ and ‘Science Communication and Bionics’ had already signed up for the interdisciplinary semester project before the term began and were able to choose their favourite project from more than 30 topics.
Innovative, Interdisciplinary, International – this is once again the theme of this year’s semester project at our faculty. Around 300 students in their third and fifth semesters of the STEM Bachelor’s degree programmes ‘Mechanical Engineering’, ‘Industrial Engineering’, ‘Mechatronic Systems Engineering’, ‘Electronics’ and ‘Science Communication and Bionics’ had already signed up for the interdisciplinary semester project before the start of the semester and were able to choose their favourite project from more than 30 topics. This wide range of topics stems from research questions within the teaching and research areas of the faculty’s professors and research assistants.
In October, the students began their work in 60 interdisciplinary teams under the guidance of the professors and with the support of the faculty’s research assistants. Once again this semester, a number of highly interesting projects are underway:
Development of a water jet robot
; Intelligent bicycle lock with wearable key
; Campus watchdog drone
; Coin sorter and counter
; Self-propelled following suitcase
; Intelligent cat flap
; Artificial lung
During a mid-term session in the Audimax, all students had the opportunity to provide initial feedback on their work. The discussion centred on organisation, supervision, teamwork and the workload. Alexander Gerber, Professor of Science Communication at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, demonstrated to the students during this event how a poster should be professionally designed. The students will present the results of their project work as posters at a final event on 23 January 2018. The Friends of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences – Cleve Campus e.V. will award prize money to the four best projects.
