Yue Jian has completed two bachelor’s degree programmes: she obtained her bachelor’s degree in ‘Bio Science and Health’ from Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. Prior to that, she completed her bachelor’s degree in ‘Textile Chemistry’ at Donghua University (Shanghai, China).
As the first graduate of the double degree programme in ‘Bio Science and Health’ – an interdisciplinary course in the field of applied natural sciences and health – at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Yue Jian was presented with her bachelor’s degree certificate. “We congratulate her on this achievement and regard it as an important contribution to our long-standing international collaborations. We hope that Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences has become a little piece of home for her whilst she is abroad,” says Prof. Dr Georg Hauck, Vice-President for Human Resources, Organisational Development and Diversity.
For Yue Jian, who comes from Jilin in north-eastern China, the main challenges of the programme were the cultural differences and the language requirements. “I was very well prepared for my time in Kleve in terms of language thanks to my German lessons, but I still found the technical terminology in the lectures particularly difficult at first,” recalls the 22-year-old. Jian would choose the dual academic degree again in a heartbeat: “I really learnt a great deal during my time in Germany and am taking a lot back with me.” Next, the double-degree graduate would like to gain some professional experience and explore the job market upon her return to China. In addition, she intends to apply for a Master’s programme at the same time, for which she will need to prepare by sitting an entrance examination in China.
To take part in the dual-degree programme run by Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences and Donghua University, students must demonstrate exceptionally good academic performance and prove their skills in a written and oral examination as well as a presentation. “We hope that the double degree, which is highly regarded in the labour market, will also attract other interested students to study at our university,” emphasises Prof. Dr Peter Simon, a professor in the Faculty of Life Sciences and one of the people responsible at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences for the double degree programme with Donghua University.
