Following on from maths the previous day, we now move on to thermodynamics. Using balloons and a pump, Professor Gebel explains key concepts in thermodynamics in a very clear and vivid way, before demonstrating Stirling engines built by the students. The pupils are allowed to examine these in great detail and even take them apart into their individual components.
After the lunch break, the programme continues with chemistry: examining fibre samples under a microscope. It’s not just wool and cotton that end up under the microscope; the students are also fascinated to examine their own hair and observe its characteristic scaly structure.
