A student named Vladimir Priscepov has developed a portable technology for blind and visually impaired people which, with the help of artificial intelligence and computers, is designed to make everyday life easier for those affected – PiVison.
Blindness is defined as the most severe form of visual impairment, characterised by a complete lack of, or only extremely limited, visual perception. Priscepov’s idea aims to help blind people find their way around more easily.
A camera captures images and visual information. This information is processed by an integrated computer and communicated to the user via headphones in the form of audio messages. Through the software, ultrasonic sensors and a camera, a visual understanding of the world is generated for the blind person. The ultrasonic sensors can detect obstacles and measure distances, thereby enabling blind people to navigate as independently as possible and thus regain a degree of freedom in their everyday lives.
The portable PiVision device is already capable of recognising numbers, objects, distances, coordinate systems, faces and emotions, thereby supporting social interaction. Further recognition capabilities and orientation aids are to be programmed in the future.
