“Girls only!” is the motto of the MINT Summer School at the Kleve campus. With this free event, taking place from 21 to 25 August 2017, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences aims to inspire schoolgirls aged 14 and over to take an interest in technical and scientific subjects and degree programmes.
The five-day summer school, taking place during the final week of the holidays, is being organised under the leadership of Phyllis Ndugire-Wakumore, herself a mechanical engineering student at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics. Together with the zdi Centre in the district of Kleve, she aims to encourage girls and young women in particular to take an interest in technical and scientific subjects. To this end, she has enlisted the help of lecturers from the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, who will give the participants an insight into their work and their studies through lectures and workshops designed specifically for them. Science need not be dry, boring or purely theoretical, believes Phyllis Ndugire-Wakumore: for example, the participants learn that maths plays an important role in origami, what a 3D printer is capable of, and how submarines are modelled on fish. Whilst learning, researching and experimenting, the summer school participants are accompanied and supported by other female students from the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, who act as tutors.
