As part of the 5th German Diversity Day, groups of students from the Faculty of Communication and the Environment were given the opportunity to take on an acoustic challenge in complete silence and with their senses heightened.
Under the leadership of Ms Tammy Schmack, a student project group organised two ‘escape excursions’ to the LockedRoom in Düsseldorf and the Geschlossene Gesellschaft in Duisburg.
To succeed in such a ‘live escape game’, you need a team whose members complement one another, gather clues together and piece together hidden hints. Only those who manage to solve the tricky puzzles as a team will find the key to escaping together.
By simulating various levels of hearing impairment, the students gained first-hand experience of the challenges people with such a disability can face in everyday life. They experienced communication from a new perspective and developed specific strategies for dealing with this new situation.
“At first, I felt a bit lost without being able to hear. It helped that we were all in the same boat and could discuss it afterwards,” said one participant after the event. Ms Stürz, coordinator of the student project group, added: “We managed to raise awareness of a marginalised issue through an exciting event and thus contribute to an inclusive society.”
