On 10 May 2017, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is once again hosting its Children’s University in the Audimax on the Kleve campus. The young students will learn how fires start, how to prevent them, and what the fire brigade does if an incident does occur. Admission is free. The event starts at 5.15 pm. The lecture ends at around 6.45 pm.
There are many reasons why a fire might start. A burning candle, a bolt of lightning or an electronic device that malfunctions. Sometimes even a tiny spark is enough. But how exactly do fires start? Why do things burn in the first place? How can a small flame turn into a major blaze? Children can experience this first-hand through exciting live experiments.
The event will be led by Heinz Lippe, Fire Safety and First Aid Officer at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and Jürgen Buil, Head of Training and Further Education at the Kleve Volunteer Fire Brigade. They will be assisted in the lecture theatre by firefighters in full gear. After the lecture, fire service vehicles and equipment will be on display on campus for the children to look at and touch. There will also be an opportunity for them to try out a fire hose nozzle for themselves. The Kleve Youth Fire Brigade will be presenting itself and its work, and will be handing out free ‘Kinderfinder’ stickers to mark children’s bedrooms.
The Children’s University
Through the Children’s University, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences offers children aged between eight and twelve the chance to develop a passion for the world of science through lectures (45 minutes) specially designed for them. Just like proper students, they are given student ID cards. They sit in lecture theatres and can ask experts all sorts of questions. The big difference from a proper degree course is that there are no exams to sit.

No registration is required for the lectures. Admission is free.
