Once again, school pupils in Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort had the chance to get a glimpse into everyday student life at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
Since 2010, interested young people have been able to attend lectures at the university during the autumn and Easter school holidays. This gives them an opportunity to get a taste of student life after leaving school.
A total of 115 different open lectures were attended by over 100 participants in the taster course during the Easter holidays in 2017. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of places, not everyone who was interested could be accommodated. However, there will be another opportunity to attend lectures at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences during the autumn half-term in 2017.
For the first time, as part of this year’s taster course at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, the programme featured a combination of an English-language lecture on ‘Thermodynamics’ by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Gebel, Professor of Process Engineering and Thermodynamics, followed by a workshop on ‘Building a Stirling engine’. A basic understanding of thermodynamics is essential for engineers to design and build effective machines and systems. Co-ordinated by the zdi Centre ‘Kreis Kleve cleverMINT’, following the introductory lecture, secondary school pupils were given the opportunity to build a Stirling engine from tin cans by themselves. The pupils were delighted to take the engines they had built home with them for further experimentation.
