During the 2016/2017 winter term, the Studium Generale programme is focusing on the topic of ‘sustainability’ through a series of fascinating lectures. The next and final lecture this term will look at energy demand, energy efficiency and energy generation. Attendance is free of charge.
Current demand for electricity in Germany stands at approximately 600 terawatt-hours per year. A complete transition to electric mobility would require a further 230 terawatt-hours of electricity per year. Where is this energy to come from, given that, on the one hand, nuclear and coal-fired power stations are being decommissioned and, on the other, the expansion of renewable energy sources is increasingly reaching its limits? The lecture examines the background and challenges of this dilemma and how engineers are tackling it. Using various examples, Prof. Schmetz will demonstrate the successes that have already been achieved in this area and what further possibilities exist.
The lecture is part of the Studium Generale programme. The lecture series is aimed at the general public, as well as students, lecturers and staff at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and presents current topics in a way that is relevant to everyday life and informative. The series also offers the opportunity to engage with current issues. “We invite everyone, regardless of age, to attend these fascinating lectures,” says the university’s President, Dr Heide Naderer.
Attendance at the Studium Generale lectures at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is free of charge for all members of the public.
