On 8 February 2017, the Children’s University at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences will kick off its next round in carnival style, as Andreas Braam, the reigning Carnival Prince of Kleve, visits the Children’s University with his guards and transforms the Audimax into the ‘fifth season’.
The Kleve Carnival Prince and his guards are looking forward to welcoming all children who’d like to find out more about the carnival: How did the carnival actually come about? Why do the guards wear uniforms? What sort of feathers does the Prince have on his cap? And why do we shout ‘Helau’? The children are warmly invited to meet the Prince, his guards and the dance mariechen up close and ask them all sorts of questions.
“Anyone who fancies it is invited to celebrate in a colourful and, indeed, ‘boundless’ style – which is our central carnival theme. Cheerfulness, humour and also a shared love and connection to our homeland and local traditions come together in a unique way during carnival. For me and for all of us, that is why we ‘live’ our carnival with all our hearts. That is why it is so important to me and to all of us to get the children excited about the (Kleve) carnival,” says Andreas Braam, Kleve Carnival Prince.
The Children’s University
Through the Children’s University, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences offers children aged between eight and twelve the opportunity to develop a passion for the world of science through lectures (45 minutes) specially designed for them. Just like proper students, they are given student ID cards. They sit in lecture theatres and can ask the experts all sorts of questions. The big difference from a proper degree course is that there are no exams to sit.

Children keen to study at the Children’s University can attend either all or just individual lectures. The current lecture timetable for the Children’s University can be viewed on the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences website at www.hochschule-rhein-waal.de. No registration is required for the lectures. Admission is free.
