Lecture as part of the Studium Generale programme at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences on the topic of ‘The Sustainability of Letters’ on 13 December 2016 at the Kleve campus
In their lecture, Dr Matthias Johannes Bauer and Prof. Jörg Petri explore how our letters came to take their current form. After a brief overview of over 2,000 years of the history of writing, right up to modern typography, they highlight the design patterns and schools that have become established. Dr Bauer will analyse, using inscriptions on medieval gravestones, how political views or worldviews are expressed through the choice and form of script. Prof. Petri will demonstrate how these patterns also permeate contemporary type design, and how the effects of the invention of typography 500 years ago can still be observed today.
In this lecture, the two speakers will provide members of the public with an accessible insight into the diverse aspects of typography and its development. A discussion session following the lecture will offer ample opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.
The lecture forms part of the Studium Generale programme. The lecture series is aimed at the general public as well as students, lecturers and staff at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and presents current topics in a way that is relevant to everyday life and informative. The series also offers the opportunity to engage with current issues. “We invite everyone, regardless of age, to attend these fascinating lectures,” says the university’s President, Dr Heide Naderer.
