Federal Environment Minister Dr Barbara Hendricks will open the Studium Generale for the 2016/2017 winter term with a lecture on sustainability
The Earth’s resources are being used today as never before. And this is despite the fact that they are often only available in limited quantities. Sustainability means using resources sparingly. People today should not live at the expense of people in other parts of the world or at the expense of future generations. Sustainability affects all areas of our lives and economic activity and is therefore a responsibility for society as a whole.
Under the motto ‘Shaping ecological and social change in Germany – the mandate of the United Nations’ ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’, Minister Hendricks outlines the prospects and challenges of sustainable change in her lecture.
“We can no longer pretend that problems in other parts of the world do not affect us. This also applies to environmental pollution and climate change. If we do not want to give up on the dream of a just world, then we must find a way to maintain our prosperity without destroying our environment,” says Hendricks.
The lecture forms part of the Studium Generale programme. The lecture series is aimed at the general public, as well as students, lecturers and staff at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, and presents current topics in a way that is relevant to everyday life and informative. The series also offers the opportunity to engage with current issues. “We invite everyone, whatever their age, to attend these fascinating lectures,” says the university’s president, Dr Heide Naderer.
Attendance at the Studium Generale lectures at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is free of charge for all members of the public.
