The faculty welcomes a new professor: Christoph Budelmann has held the post of Professor of Signal Processing and Network Technology since 1 March.
Christoph Budelmann, born in 1985, completed a dual degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Darmstadt and at the École Nationale Supérieure de l’Électronique et de ses Applications in Cergy-Pontoise, France. He then turned his hobby into a career and, in 2010, founded Budelmann Elektronik GmbH in Münster, which develops and manufactures bespoke electronics and software for intelligent machines and systems. In 2017, he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. degree from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bremen with a thesis on optically powered smart sensor nodes for cost-sensitive applications. After seven years as a lecturer at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, he has now been appointed as a professor at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics. Among other subjects, he teaches industrial electronics manufacturing, measurement and sensor technology, signal processing and network technology.
From a technical perspective, what consistently inspires him in the many industrial and research projects he has undertaken is working along the process chain that underpins numerous systems and applications: from diverse sensor technology and analogue and digital signal processing right through to the control of actuators and communication between the components.
Christoph Budelmann is looking forward to his new responsibilities at the Kleve campus: “A personal focus of mine is on intelligent sensors, which not only measure individual physical values but also fuse different sensor data and exchange the results with other systems. I find it very appealing that the new professorship brings these topics together in teaching and applied research, and that the university provides the framework to advance this work in an interdisciplinary manner, drawing on the expertise of other departments.”
He volunteers on the DIHK’s ‘Industry and Research’ committee and serves as a judge in North Rhine-Westphalia for the ‘Jugend forscht’ competition, in which he was the national winner in the technology category in 2005. He is also a member of various expert groups focusing on Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, innovation promotion and research transfer.
He is the author of numerous academic papers in the field of embedded systems and writes a regular column entitled “Design-Tipp” in the trade journal “Elektronik Praxis” on the subject of electronics design and manufacturing.
