Dr Christoph Schlünken is the new representative of the Friends’ Association and chairs the 50-member university advisory board, which comprises leading figures from business, politics and society.
Dr Christoph Schlünken, who holds a PhD in chemistry and was born in Duisburg, has held senior positions at ALTANA AG for the past 15 years. Since 2014, as a member of the Executive Board, he has been responsible, amongst other things, for innovation management, key account management and central procurement. A particular priority for Schlünken is fostering closer collaboration between local businesses and the university through work placements, degree theses and joint research projects. Schlünken also supports the university in maintaining contact with graduates, as they act as an ambassador for the university and the Lower Rhine region.
Dr Stefan Dietzfelbinger, Chairman of the Friends’ Association, highlighted Dr Matthias L. Wolfgruber’s outstanding commitment to the university’s development during the farewell ceremony for Schlünken’s predecessor: “It is well known, far beyond campus life, just how much personal commitment Dr Wolfgruber has shown in supporting the university’s development.” Wolfgruber’s appointment as a member of the University Council by the Ministry of Science of North Rhine-Westphalia demonstrates this appreciation.
Wolfgruber had served as President of the Friends’ Association since 2009. The Friends’ Association was founded at the same time as the university on the initiative of the regional business community and the districts of Kleve and Wesel, with the aim of firmly establishing the university in the region. Today, the university’s network comprises 150 companies from the Lower Rhine region, 13 local authorities and numerous private supporters.
