With a talk entitled “Science & Humour – Connecting the Dots”, the well-known science comedian Vince Ebert captivated students, lecturers and staff at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
The Audimax at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences on the Kleve campus hosted a public, English-language guest lecture on the topic of ‘Science & Humour – Connecting the dots’. Vince Ebert, a qualified physicist, explained the scientific connections using wordplay, gestures and humour, captivating not only the audience of science specialists. At the invitation of Prof. Alexander Gerber, Professor of Science Communication at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Ebert demonstrated in an unconventional, humorous and provocative way that science can be highly entertaining.
Ebert accompanied his guest lecture with an interesting presentation. “What do you see in this picture?” Ebert asked the university staff and students present. Here is an example from the lecture that illustrates the content of this special talk. The picture does not show a square, but merely 12 lines which, due to their arrangement, suggest a square. After a brief pause for thought, the familiar ‘aha’ moment set in here too. The conclusion of this special lecture is that it is often our assumptions about something that influence our actions or our thinking, rather than the facts themselves.
Since September 2013, Vince Ebert has been touring Germany, Austria and Switzerland with his new stage show ‘EVOLUTION’; on ARD, he regularly presents the programme ‘Wissen vor acht – Werkstatt’. Otherwise No One Will Do It for You’ and ‘Stay Curious!’ – have all become bestsellers and sold over half a million copies.
