In their joint lecture, Peter Garzke, who holds a degree in sports science, and Professor Dr Ute Hansen will explore the topic ‘The sea – both a leisure paradise and a rubbish tip: from trend sports to plastic waste’.
The focus will be on how plastic ends up in the sea and what solutions are available to remove it from the sea. Measures to reduce further littering will be discussed. In addition, new trends in water sports will be presented – such as ‘foiling’, where hydrofoil designs are used to move across the water. And, as it is useful for water sports enthusiasts to know, there will also be a talk on how to deal with extreme situations on the water. Behaviours that are important for survival in such situations will be outlined.
The event will take place at the Kleve campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Marie-Curie-Straße 1, Lecture Theatre Centre, ground floor, Room 01 EG 005 (Lecture Theatre 1).
The lecture forms part of the Studium Generale programme and has been designed to make academic research accessible through lectures that are easy for the general public to understand. The lecture programme is aimed at members of the public, students, school pupils and those interested in science in the region, as well as lecturers and staff at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, with a focus on general, universal education. The lecture series also provides a platform for lively exchange and discussion on current issues.
