The Ruhr Regional Association and Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences are organising the first ‘Ruhr Knowledge Night’ in Kamp-Lintfort
Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, with its campus in Kamp-Lintfort, is one of the main venues. Among other things, the programme includes a record attempt for children aged between six and ten. The younger guests can find out who is the fastest in the whole country. Older visitors will be introduced to the multimedia mobility and transport concept ‘Promuove’. Everyone can take part in the ‘Sustainable Energy’ hands-on activity and build their own bioreactor or wind turbine. In the climate game, interested participants sit at a table with other ‘global players’ and formulate climate policy for their country.
The first regional discovery tour through the world of science is being organised by the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) as part of the launch event for ‘klimametropole RUHR 2022’. Regional Director Karola Geiß-Netthöfel invites people in the Ruhr region to take part in the Ruhr Knowledge Night: “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we must face, both as a society and as an economic region. Our young universities and research institutions play a pivotal role in shaping the Ruhr region in a climate-friendly way. With the Ruhr Knowledge Night, we – and our young people in particular – have a unique opportunity to experience this excellent research landscape at first hand, to discover its innovations and to understand them.”
A wide variety of disciplines will present their unique approaches to climate change – from engineering to design, society and culture; from mathematics to climate research; and from biology to urban planning; the full breadth of the Ruhr’s knowledge landscape will be represented. The focus is on new and efficient technologies, resource-efficient production methods and processes, as well as on lifestyles, values and cultural initiatives.
Alongside Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences (Kamp-Lintfort Campus), the following institutions will be open during the Ruhr Knowledge Night: FOM University of Economics & Management in Essen, the Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen e.V., the NanoEnergy Technology Centre (NETZ) in Duisburg, the Faculty of Physics at the University of Duisburg-Essen on the Duisburg campus, and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology e.V., also in Duisburg. They all embody innovation and knowledge and are, at the same time, driving forces behind structural change in the Ruhr region – from an industrial hub to a dynamic knowledge region.
Alongside the six scientific and research institutions, five key locations in Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen and Gelsenkirchen form part of the Ruhr’s knowledge landscape. These include the Haus der Technik in Essen, the Gelsenkirchen Science Park, the Dortmunder U, the Blue Square in Bochum city centre and the Tectrum in Duisburg.
With the ‘KennisNacht Ruhr’ ticket, visitors can use local public transport. In addition, three shuttle bus routes offer a varied discovery tour through the ‘KennisNacht Ruhr’. The VRR is the mobility partner.
The Ruhr Knowledge Night forms part of the decade-long ‘klimametropole RUHR 2022’ project, through which the RVR is contributing to the state-wide KlimaExpoNRW with its own independent programme. The aims of ‘klimametropole RUHR 2022’ are to tackle the challenges of climate change in the Ruhr Metropolis and to showcase projects and stakeholders.
