The Kamp-Lintfort campus has been awarded the ‘German Design Award’. This is the fourth award the campus has received since it opened in April 2014.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 29 October 2015: In April 2014, the grand opening and open days were held for the new Kamp-Lintfort Campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, situated at Friedrich-Heinrich-Allee 25 in Kamp-Lintfort. In its still short history, the campus has now received its fourth award for its architecture: the ‘German Design Award’.
The Osnabrück-based architecture and engineering firm, pbr Planungsbüro Rohling AG, has received a ‘Special Mention’ for ‘the outstanding design quality’ of the new building at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences’ Kamp-Lintfort campus in the ‘Architecture’ category. Launched in 2012, the German Design Award is already one of the most recognised design competitions worldwide. The award will be presented on 12 February 2016 in Frankfurt.
As the initiator and organiser of the German Design Award, the German Design Council is one of the leading centres of expertise for communication and knowledge transfer in the field of design. In addition to organising various major industry competitions, it also runs the Iconic Award, which was presented to the Kamp-Lintfort campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences last year.
pbr Planungsbüro Rohling AG emerged as the winner of a master planner competition in 2010 with its design for the university’s Kamp-Lintfort site – developed in collaboration with the Straelen-based architect Michael van Ooyen – and was responsible for the overall planning. The client is the Building and Property Management Agency (BLB NRW), Duisburg branch. The outdoor landscaping was designed by Kuttner+Kahl Landscape Architects from Hamburg.

Iconic Award
The ‘German Design Award’ is not the first accolade for the Kamp-Lintfort campus. Back in August 2014, pbr Planungsbüro Rohling AG from Osnabrück received the first international architecture and design prize for the Kamp-Lintfort campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The Kamp-Lintfort campus was honoured with the ‘Iconic Award’ for its architecture and design. This international architecture and design prize recognises visionary architecture, innovative products and sustainable communication within the construction and property sector.
Award for Good Buildings
The campus received its second award in November 2014. During a jury session for the ‘Award for Good Buildings’ competition, the Kamp-Lintfort campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences was honoured with a commendation from the Lower Rhine Branch of the Association of German Architects (BDA). The ‘Award for Good Buildings’ competition aims to help raise awareness of quality in planning and construction and to set quality standards in contemporary architecture. The awards recognise particularly high-quality buildings, groups of buildings or urban developments completed in the last four years that are situated within the area covered by the respective BDA group.
Award for Exemplary Buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Kamp-Lintfort campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences recently received its third award: the ‘Award for Exemplary Buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia’. Exemplary buildings must demonstrate pioneering approaches to future construction projects from a design, technical, environmental and economic perspective. Guided by these principles, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, represented by the State Ministry for Construction, Housing, Urban Development and Transport, in collaboration with the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Architects, organises the ‘Award for Exemplary Buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia’ every five years. This year, too, the jury selected 33 projects from around 200 entries, which collectively reflect the diversity of current building projects in the state. The Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Kamp-Lintfort Campus, was honoured as one of these exemplary buildings.
Owing to its far-reaching impact, the ‘Award for Exemplary Buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia’ has been making an important contribution to the promotion of building culture in North Rhine-Westphalia for 35 years. The awards recognise buildings and facilities “which are particularly aligned with the guiding principles of sustainable development of the built environment and which combine creativity with a focus on meeting actual needs”. Criteria assessed included urban integration and site quality, the quality of the environment for users and the building’s functionality, as well as design, economy and ecology. The awards will be presented on 23 November 2015 at the K21 Art Museum in Düsseldorf.
