Kleve’s ideas competition on sustainability is entering its second round. The launch event at the Kleve campus of the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) on 30 April marked the start of the application phase. Interested parties from Kleve and the surrounding area gathered in the early evening at the lecture theatre centre on the Kleve campus.
The second edition of the ‘Klever Birne’ sustainability award has now been launched. A launch event at the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) marked the start of the application phase. Through this ideas competition, the City of Kleve and HSRW are seeking creative solutions from people in the region to make Kleve more sustainable.
Interested parties from Kleve and the surrounding area gathered in the early evening of 30 April at the lecture theatre centre on the Kleve campus. There, the ‘Klever Birne’ team began by providing information on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They made it clear that sustainability encompasses more than just environmental protection; it represents a complex interplay of ecological, social and economic aspects.
The competition seeks innovative solutions to the pressing challenges of our time. The ideas submitted must address at least one of the 17 SDGs and be suitable for implementation in Kleve. The top three winners of the competition will receive prize money: €2,000 for first place, €1,500 for second place and €1,000 for third place. In addition, personalised coaching will be provided to help bring the idea to fruition. A student prize and a people’s choice award will also be presented.
Wolfgang Gebing, Mayor of Kleve, emphasised the importance of joint efforts towards sustainable development: “Together, we want to become sustainable, through local initiatives such as our planned sustainability strategy for Kleve and research funding from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences for the TransRegINT project. Promoting sustainability is a shared responsibility that people and local authorities around the world are taking on; that is why this sustainability prize showcases local and international goals through concrete examples.”
Eligible to enter are citizens, private groups, students, educational providers, public bodies, companies, associations, start-ups and institutions that are actively committed to sustainable development. Last year, innovative projects such as the mobile climate café, the sustainable market hall in the former Margarine-Union building, the community garden at the SOS-Klapheckenhof and the ‘Sustainable Education in the Fields’ school project run by Rindern Primary School were recognised. The People’s Choice Award went to a biogas project. HSRW and the City of Kleve are once again looking forward to creative ideas this year.
