On 14 April 2015, students at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences celebrated the Nepalese New Year together with the Nepalese Honorary Consul-General, Ram Pratap Thapa.
The Welcome Centre seized this opportunity to organise a colourful, intercultural celebration. Alongside traditional dances and a presentation about the country, a live band made up of several students showcased their musical talents. In his speech, Honorary Consul-General Ram Pratap Thapa highlighted the importance of such intercultural celebrations and thanked the university for its excellent work in integrating international students.
Of course, the event would not have been complete without some traditional dishes. As well as rice and lentil purée, guests were able to sample Nepalese cream cheese and a chicken curry, which takes up to six hours to cook. Chiya, the country’s traditional drink – a mixture of black tea, milk and cardamom – rounded off the culinary experience. All this was organised entirely by over 30 students with the support of the Welcome Centre. Not only the external guests, but also the students themselves were impressed by the overwhelmingly positive response to the celebration.
It was certainly a cause for celebration: Happy Nepali New Year 2072!
