It was a real treat! 120 pre-school children watched the exciting and interactive play ‘Hochzeit unter Strom’. With a story centred on Gundi and Gustel’s first flat together, the ‘Haus der kleinen Forscher’ network invited children from nurseries across the Kleve district to the Kleve Town Hall.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 2 April 2015: What is electricity? Which household appliances need electricity? Which of them use the most energy? Or what might happen if all the appliances were switched on at the same time? The interactive play ‘Hochzeit unter Strom’ (A Wedding Under Current) introduces the topic of electricity in a child-friendly way through these and other exciting questions.
In the play, the couple in love, Gundi and Gustel, move into their first flat together and furnish it with all the latest gadgets, such as a television, a computer, a hairdryer, a coffee machine, a toaster and a washing machine. On their wedding day, they are horrified to discover that the circuit has tripped. The power goes out! The children watched with bated breath to see if – and how – Gundi and Gustel would still manage to make it to their own wedding. After the play, the children discussed the content with the actors and looked for ways to use energy responsibly.
A big thank you goes to RWE, who sponsored the interactive energy theatre, and to the Department of Schools, Culture and Sport of the City of Kleve, who made the town hall available. The play tied in directly with the children’s everyday lives and addressed real-life questions in a child-friendly way. The children are now continuing to explore the topic in their nurseries as well. They are finding out which electrical appliances are available there, what their functions are, and which appliances they could replace by using their own muscle power.
