For the first time, the Rotary Club Grafschaft Moers is awarding an incentive prize to alumni of the ‘International Business and Social Sciences’ degree programme at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 4 February 2015: The Rotary Club of Grafschaft Moers is awarding an incentive prize to students at the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in Kamp-Lintfort for the first time. Under the leadership of President Dr Wilhelm Kirschke, alumni Saskia Sattler and Felix Sohnrey will be honoured at an awards ceremony. The scholarship is worth a total of 1,000 euros and is intended to support the graduates. They are each being awarded 500 euros in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and their exceptional commitment to the community.
Former student Saskia Sattler is a scholarship holder of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and demonstrated excellent academic performance and outstanding commitment to student affairs during her English-language degree programme at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. She spent a semester abroad at the Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN) in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and completed various work placements both at home and abroad. “During my studies, I was very keen to champion student interests as part of the appointments and pedagogical suitability committees at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences and to support students as a tutor,” says the award winner, Saskia Sattler. “My bachelor’s thesis examined the extent to which small and medium-sized enterprises in the South Westphalia region are able to attract and retain staff in the face of demographic change and a regional shortage of skilled workers.” In her qualitative-empirical study, Ms Sattler drew on concepts from so-called ‘employer branding’, a new approach to highlighting companies’ strengths and thereby attracting highly qualified staff.
During his studies at the Kamp-Lintfort campus, Felix Sohnrey also distinguished himself through above-average academic performance and demonstrated exceptional commitment to university politics. He served as Vice-President of the Student Parliament (StuPa) and as Returning Officer for the university’s StuPa and Faculty Council elections. He gained academic work experience during his studies as a tutor and student assistant. His experience abroad includes setting up a medical clinic in Guatemala as part of a student project, a semester abroad at Mondragon University – which specialises in cooperatives – in the Basque Country in Spain, and a year in Australia. In his Bachelor’s thesis, Mr Sohnrey analysed Germany’s role in the European debt crisis, focusing in particular on the export-oriented nature of the German economy. Through his practice-based analysis, he helps to explain the euro debt crisis, which remains a pressing issue.
Having successfully graduated from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in August and September 2014, Saskia Sattler and Felix Sohnrey are currently studying for a Master’s degree in ‘Philosophy, Politics and Economics’ at Witten/Herdecke University.
