Virtual start-ups

During the annual Start-up Week, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences offers students the opportunity to take part in a week-long business simulation.

Last year, 30 dedicated students took part. As part of the simulation, the students worked in groups to develop virtual start-up companies operating in the consumer goods industry. To do this, they had to devise realistic business concepts and make fundamental management decisions that would have a significant impact on the first two financial years. The students also had to cope with a range of additional challenges, such as deadlines, team dynamics, and individual and group projects on various topics.

“What I really like about the StartUp simulation is that it encourages our students to get actively involved. Students learn more about how the economy actually works when they can put theory into practice and experience the consequences of their actions first-hand. The game encourages them to analyse available data more effectively and creates a unique group dynamic. I am always impressed by how much our students enjoy taking part in a simulation like this. “The strengths of this business simulation were the diversity of the results, the highly effective learning experience and the fruitful discussions,” says Raluca Zekić, research assistant at the Faculty of Life Sciences and head of the business simulation.

The winners of the 2014 business simulation were presented with a trophy, which was officially awarded by Raluca Zekić and Prof. Dr Dietrich Darr, Professor of Agribusiness.
