Under the theme ‘100%: Planning ‘greener’ cities’, a lecture by Prof. Carlow will take place on Thursday 21 April 2016 at 6 pm on the Kamp-Lintfort campus as part of the preparations for the 2020 State Garden Show.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 14 April 2016: Today, cities and urban regions are where most people live. The United Nations articulated this in 2006 with the concept of the ‘Urban Age’. The fact that liveable, sustainable or ‘green’ cities emerge as a result of urbanisation is by no means a given.
The term ‘sustainable urban development’ encapsulates one of the greatest challenges – and at the same time one of the greatest hopes – of our generation. The speaker is convinced that, in the 21st century, architects and town planners will play a vital role in one of the most significant transformation processes facing our society: the (re)construction of cities and urban landscapes into ecologically, economically and socially resilient and equitable urban living environments. The fundamental examination and search for robust ideas, tools and strategies for sustainable cities, communities and lifestyles therefore plays a central role in her work.
Prof. Carlow discusses how to shape people’s living environments, how cities can remain or become places worth living in, and what challenges must be addressed in this process – drawing on urban development projects from her firm ‘COBE’ in Berlin (www.cobe.de) and on the basis of research carried out by the “Institute for Sustainable Urbanism” (ISU) at the Technical University of Braunschweig (www.sustainableurbanism.de), which she heads.
