The next Children’s University lecture, on the ‘do-it-yourself’ ethos of the ‘makers’, will take place on 2 March 2016. Admission is free. It starts at 5.15 pm in the Audimax in Kamp-Lintfort.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 26 February 2016: ‘Makers’ have actually always been around. They are people who enjoy tinkering, want to understand how things work and invent new things. ‘Makers’ meet in community workshops to turn their ideas into reality. The movement grew out of the ‘do-it-yourself’ ethos. But who exactly are these makers? Prof. Nebe and Adriana Cabrera will be exploring this question at the Children’s University on the Kamp-Lintfort campus.
A tool frequently used by makers is the 3D printer – the perfect device for producing products or spare parts at home according to one’s own ideas and wishes. In the Star Trek films, this possibility is already a reality; there, the crew can rely on replicators. NASA has now seized this opportunity to launch a competition for children: ‘The Star Trek™ Replicator Challenge’. Here, children can submit ideas for using 3D printers in space.
There is also a ‘makerspace’ in Kamp-Lintfort: the FabLab at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. In this lecture, Prof. Nebe and Adriana Cabrera will show you all the things you can make there yourself.
The Children’s University
Through the Children’s University, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences offers children aged between eight and twelve the opportunity to develop a passion for the world of science through lectures (45 minutes) designed especially for them. Just like real students, they are given student ID cards. They sit in lecture theatres and can ask real professors all sorts of questions. The main difference from a proper degree programme is that there are no exams to sit.
