High honour for Gerard Meijer


Gerard Meijer, Chair of the University Council, was given a farewell ceremony as President of Radboud University in Nijmegen and was awarded the title of ‘Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion’.

Under the presidency of Gerard Meijer, Radboud University in Nijmegen enjoyed many successes. Five academics were awarded the Netherlands’ highest scientific honour, the ‘Spinoza Prize’. Three leading gravitational research programmes were awarded to Nijmegen. Through the ‘Radboud Excellence Initiative’, an idea conceived by Gerard Meijer, he attracted numerous internationally renowned and academically talented individuals from all over the world to the Netherlands.

Throughout his presidency, Radboud University was named the best university in the Netherlands every year and was recently honoured with this award for the sixth consecutive time.

Gerard Meijer will continue his academic career as Director of the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, a position he also held prior to his tenure in Nijmegen. He will remain associated with Radboud University as a ‘zero-hour professor’.

Gerard Meijer remains Chair of the University Council at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences.
