Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences has come third out of a total of eight institutions in this year’s “University Ranking on Gender Equality”. It ranks amongst the top institutions in the categories ‘Full-time academic and artistic staff’ and ‘Increase in the proportion of women amongst full-time academic and artistic staff compared with 2014’, whilst it ranks in the middle of the table in the areas ‘Professorships’ and ‘Increase in the proportion of women holding professorships compared with 2014’. In a comparison of German federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia ranks in the middle of the table – meaning that Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences also performs above average within the state.
“We are delighted with this positive result and feel encouraged in our work towards gender equality. We are confident that we can continue along this successful path in the coming years. With the Gender Equality Framework Plan, we have laid a solid foundation for continuing our commitment to empowering female staff in academia,” said the team at the Central Gender Equality Office at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The Vice-President for International Affairs and Diversity, Prof. Dr Tatiana Zimenkova, added: “A fantastic result and an incentive for our newly launched, four-stage career development programme, PRO4-HSRW. Through this externally funded project, supported by the federal government, we will be promoting women and diverse groups in academia in particular over the coming years.”
The ranking
The “University Ranking Based on Gender Equality Aspects” is a quality assurance tool for gender equality at universities, developed by the Centre of Excellence for Women in Science and Research (CEWS) at the Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences. This year’s ranking, the tenth of its kind, is based on official higher education statistics from 2019. The multidimensional indicator model takes into account, amongst many other factors, the subject profiles of the universities.
