During the summer holidays, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences has no fewer than two events in store for school pupils who are eager to learn and interested in the natural sciences:
Pupils from Year 10 onwards can immerse themselves in the world of bionics at the ‘Bio-inspired Robotics’ adventure camp. Bionics draws inspiration from materials and structures found in nature and applies them to modern technology. This is exactly what the pupils get to try out for themselves during the workshop. Guided by experts from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, they will build a research robot whose locomotion system is modelled on that of fish. This offers not only fascinating insights into biology, but also into mechatronics, electronics and engineering.
The adventure camp will take place on 16 and 17 July 2018, from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm each day, at the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics.
‘Girls only!’ is the motto, however, for the second MINT Summer School for schoolgirls aged 16 and over. Organised by Francesca Bors, a student at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, the five-day hands-on camp aims to inspire more women to take an interest in scientific subjects and degree programmes. In lectures and workshops, female and male lecturers not only provide insights into their work and the subject areas, but also demonstrate that science is by no means dry or boring. For example, participants will learn that maths plays an important role in origami, what a 3D printer is capable of, and how submarines are modelled on fish. The girls are also shown what future career opportunities await them in fields such as mathematics, chemistry, mechanics, electronics, robotics, 3D printing, bionics and thermodynamics. The participants are supported by other female students from the faculty, who, as tutors, also share their experiences of studying STEM subjects as women.
The STEM Summer School will take place from 20 to 24 August 2018, from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm each day, at the Kleve campus of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, within the Faculty of Technology and Bionics.
