On 5 July 2017, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is hosting the next lecture in its Children’s University programme. The young participants will learn how to make sense of it when something very bad happens in life, how to cope with it, and where to find help.
Most of the time, life goes well. Sometimes, however, really bad things happen in life, such as accidents, death or war. At times like that, we long for help and comfort. Children are very often treated well by adults. Sometimes, however, adults behave very unkindly. They say things to children that really hurt them. Sometimes they hit them or do things that hurt them. Afterwards, the children feel bad, sad and lonely, and they need help.
Whenever something very bad happens in the lives of children and people, they experience trauma. Prof. Dr Heike Helen Weinbach, Professor of Education specialising in early childhood education at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, will discuss the following with the young participants in the lecture: What is trauma? How do children feel after experiencing trauma? Where can they get help, and how can they help themselves?
Parents are, of course, also welcome to attend this lecture.
The Children’s University
Through the Children’s University, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences offers children aged between eight and twelve the opportunity to develop a passion for the world of science through lectures (45 minutes) designed especially for them. Just like real students, they are given student ID cards. They sit in lecture theatres and can ask experts all sorts of questions. The main difference from a proper degree course is that there are no exams to sit.

Children keen to take part in the Children’s University can attend either all or just individual lectures. The current lecture timetable for the Children’s University can be viewed on the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences website at www.hochschule-rhein-waal.de. No registration is required for the lectures. Admission is free.
