As part of the celebrations marking the 775th anniversary of the town of Kleve, the Städtische Singgemeinde hosted a special concert at the Stadthalle Kleve last Saturday, 10 June 2017: Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” was performed by 150 singers and a 55-piece orchestra.
The university’s Media Computing Group, comprising students from the Bachelor’s degree programmes in ‘Media and Communication Informatics’ and ‘Information and Communication Design’, as well as the Master’s degree programme in ‘Digital Media’ at the Faculty of Communication and Environment, captivated the audience with a multimedia show. An interactive video presentation utilised ‘motion capture’ technologies, amongst other things, to transform the movements of dancer Ying-chi Chen’s live performance into digital images, which were then projected onto a screen. Further visual interpretations were as diverse as they were unconventional, opening up entirely new artistic approaches to *Carmina Burana*.
Under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ido Iurgel, Professor of Media Informatics at the Faculty of Communication and Environment, the students created these works of art, utilising a wide variety of visualisation technologies in their individual projects or group work. For example, technology from the games industry enabled expressive real-time effects.
Doaa Darwish was responsible for the artistic coordination and also created a large number of the interpretations. Further visualisations were created by Christian Spieß and Mohamed Elkateb. Other works were produced through group collaboration. Nicolas Fischöder was responsible for technical coordination, supported by Jan Sommer, Markus Fleischer, Adrian Krawczyk, Bruno Guedes-Branco and Adrian Beckmann.
