The “INIA” submersible, developed and designed in-house by the “HSRW Submarine Team” at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, is wowing audiences at the “boot” trade fair in Düsseldorf. The submersible can be viewed at stand E44 in Hall 5 until 25 January 2015.
Kleve/Kamp-Lintfort, 20 January 2015: The “INIA” submersible, built by the “HSRW Submarine Team”, is proving to be a real crowd-puller at the boot trade fair in Düsseldorf. Students from various disciplines, including the Master’s programmes in ‘Mechanical Engineering’ and ‘Bionics/Biomimetics’ as well as the Bachelor’s programme in ‘Industrial Engineering’ at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, developed the bionic, human-powered submersible as part of an interdisciplinary project.
‘INIA’ has the body shape of a tuna and the fin shape of a dolphin. What makes this underwater craft unique is its special propulsion mechanism, which was painstakingly designed by the students. Unlike many other underwater vessels, it uses fins for propulsion rather than conventional propellers. The pilot sits inside the submersible’s hull and propels it using their own muscle power. Thanks to its unique design, the students have already been awarded the ‘Outstanding Innovation Prize’ at the second European International Submersible Race in the UK.
Until 25 January 2015, students from Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences will be showcasing the submersible at a stand sponsored by the ‘boot’ trade fair in Düsseldorf. At this stand, all interested visitors can find out about the unique features of its propulsion system, safety, ergonomics and mechanics.
