An overview of your funding options
To help you make the most of your study or internship semester abroad, there are various funding programmes and financial support options available to you. The main programmes are Erasmus+ for stays in Europe and PROMOS for global mobility. In addition, there are other scholarships and individual funding opportunities. This page provides an overview of the main options and explains which funding might be suitable for your plans.
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s main funding programme for supporting study abroad placements.
Funding is available for:
- Study semesters at European partner universities
- Internship semester (internships) in other European countries
- STA (Staff Mobility for Teaching)
- STT (Staff Mobility for Training)
Erasmus+ is a funding scheme and not a self-contained programme. A prerequisite is a planned study or work placement abroad.
Funding:
- monthly mobility grants
- additional grants depending on individual circumstances
- organisational support
Inclusion and equal opportunities:
Erasmus+ offers additional funding opportunities for students with special needs, e.g.:
- Students with a disability or chronic illness
- Students with children
- Working students
- Students from non-academic backgrounds
PROMOS is a scholarship programme designed to support study abroad placements worldwide – particularly outside Europe.
Funding is available for, amongst other things:
- Study periods worldwide (partner university or free mover)
- Work placements abroad (minimum 4 weeks)
Important notes:
- Internships in Europe are generally funded through Erasmus+
- PROMOS and Erasmus+ cannot be claimed simultaneously
Application:
- Deadlines: 15 January and 15 June
- Applications for placements in the relevant calendar year
- Decision usually within 8 weeks
Requirements (brief overview):
- Enrolment at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences
- Specific project (location and dates confirmed)

PROMOS Requirements & Information
Funding:
- Monthly partial grants (depending on the federal state, approx. €350–550)
- funding usually available for up to two months

In addition to Erasmus+ and PROMOS, there are other ways to obtain financial support for a period abroad. These include, amongst others:
- Scholarship programmes for study and internships abroad
(e.g. programmes run by the DAAD or other organisations (click here for the DAAD scholarship database) - Funding for specific target groups
(e.g. students with special needs or specific academic backgrounds) - Short-term and partial grants
to support individual phases of your stay
