Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is breaking new ground with its ‘MuWi’ event – Music Meets Science. For the first time, the university’s music department and the Centre for Research, Innovation and Transfer (ZFIT) are building bridges between these very fields.
“Creativity plays a crucial role in both music and science. With this event, we aim to demonstrate that these two fields can be combined in diverse and entertaining ways,” say Sarah Lampe from the University Music Department and Dr Gerhard Heusipp from ZFIT, who co-founded ‘MuWi’.
A mix of short talks, presentations, experiments and performances by choirs, the orchestra and other musicians from the university promises an entertaining evening. Around 40 musicians will treat the audience to a feast for the ears. The university orchestra, newly formed last winter term, will perform pieces from well-known films – including ‘Harry Potter’ and the second instalment of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy – featuring strings, brass and woodwinds. The university choir will take part in a musical experiment of a special kind. In collaboration with Alexander Struck, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the university, the choir members will take part in a physics and chemistry experiment. In addition, the pop choir Concorida and participants from the university’s cajón and guitar courses will be performing.
Professor Dr William Megill will give a talk on whale song. The ‘Haus der kleinen Forscher’ (Little Scientists’ House) will offer a hands-on experiment. The programme also includes presentations by the ‘Creative Writing Workshop’ from the Faculty of Society and Economics, the launch of a project on controlling computers via electrical brain waves, and a demonstration of standing sound waves. A start-up company from the IT sector, founded by a student from the university’s Faculty of Communication and Environment, will also be presenting itself.
The event will take place on 26 June 2018, from 6.00 pm, at the Kleve campus of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Marie-Curie-Straße 1, Lecture Theatre Centre, Building 01, ground floor, Audimax. Attendance is free of charge. No advance registration is required. The AStA will provide drinks and snacks for a fee.
