To avoid starting with a blank page, the Web Relaunch team recommends using sample pages (templates). These are already designed in line with the new website’s design concept and tailored to standard content requirements. They can be copied and then adapted and filled in to suit the needs of your own site.
Available templates:
- Long sample page with image
- Short sample page with image
- Sample page without image
- Degree programme
- Available content elements
The new design incorporates the idea that pages should, where possible, feature an image in the header area. For this purpose, the “Long example page with image” (many different content elements, suitable for detailed pages) or “Short example page with image” (similar structure but with fewer content elements, suitable for shorter pages) can be used. For both variants, unnecessary content elements can be deleted or missing ones added. An overview of all possible content elements can be found on the “Available content elements” example page.
As there are also pages where it is difficult to include images, the “Sample page without image” is also available. Here, a teaser text (max. 300 characters) must be set in the page properties.
The texts on all example pages contain instructions on how to use the respective example pages and content elements.
The degree programme pages are to be used exclusively for presenting the degree programmes.
Using the templates: How to
do it To use one of the template pages, right-click on the relevant page to copy it and paste it into the desired location within the structure (right-click: paste). Important: Please always copy templates, do not cut them.
Translation of content
If changes are subsequently made to the German elements, these are automatically applied to the English version as well. You only need to click the “DeepL” button again when new elements are added. The system automatically recognises which elements have already been translated and which are new.
If you delete a German element, the English version is automatically deleted as well. If an English element is deleted, the German version remains because it is the original element. The English version can be regenerated using the DeepL button at the top.
Text adjustments: The English translation can be adjusted without changing the German version. Please note: If anything is changed in the German version, the adjusted English version will also be overwritten. If this is not desired, it is possible to disable the overwrite function. Please note that in this mode, content originally created in German will no longer be automatically translated. We therefore only recommend this mode if a large number of adjustments are made to the English text. If you require instructions for the decoupled mode, please contact the Web Relaunch team.
It is necessary to provide an English translation of the metadata and descriptive text for all images, videos, documents and other files in the file list. At present, this metadata cannot be translated automatically by the interface, meaning that the German version would appear on the English page unless an English version has been entered manually.
Please remember to update the English translations if you have made any changes to the German descriptions or metadata.
Instructions:
- Open the file list and click on the document to which you wish to add a translation
- At the very top, switch from “German [Site:base], German [Site_intranet]” to the English version.
- Insert an English translation wherever you have entered information in the German version. Overwrite the German text as you do so. Enter at least the following English translations in the ‘General’ tab:
- Title
- Alternative text
- Don’t forget the image caption if you have included a German one.
- If necessary, also note any changes to the copyright information (the “Metadata” tab) if details other than the name have been provided.
- Click ‘Save’ at the end.
Links and buttons
There are various ways to format links and buttons so that they are clearly identifiable as such. To create a specific link or button, follow these steps:
- Select the text in the text field that you want to set as a link or button
- Click on the link icon in the menu bar at the top right
- In the box that opens, click on the pencil icon
- Select your link destination
- For an internal page (default), you can select the desired page in the site map and choose it by clicking on the link icon to the right of it. Please note: Internal links must be set using this method. Please never insert internal links using a URL, i.e. do not copy the link from the browser and paste it, as links can change.
- If you wish to set something other than an internal link, select the appropriate option from the tabs at the top: e.g. ‘File’ for a download, ‘External URL’ for an external website, or ‘Email’ for an email address.
- Select the desired, appropriate link design from the drop-down menu. Below, you can see which links and buttons are available.
- The text of a link or button can easily be changed later in the text field.
When designing a page, you can choose from various header options to customise the header or introductory section. Editors have the following options available:
- Page with header image (default)
- Page without image (introductory text)
- Page with header image slider (H1 page title below)
The default setting is “Page with header image”, which is the best option in most cases. A slider with multiple images is also possible, but should only be used if it makes sense in terms of content. If no images are available or can be created, the “Page without image” header can be used. In this case, a teaser text must be included.
If you wish to switch from the default header option “Page with header image” to a different header type, click on your page’s properties and select the “Backend layout” drop-down menu under the “Appearance” tab.
Please note: The options “Page with header image slider (H1 page title above)” and “Page without header” are for admins only.
