Students from Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences visit the Unilever plant in Kleve

The invitation from the Unilever plant to the event on 5 December 2013 was met with a flood of registrations, meaning that the available places had to be allocated across the various degree programmes. Ultimately, 15 students represented 10 different degree programmes at Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences.

Following the successful event earlier in the summer, when the factory tour for the students ended with a barbecue, this time – in keeping with the Christmas spirit – the biscuit recipes were dug out.

The invitation from the Unilever factory for the event on 5 December 2013 was met with a flood of registrations, meaning that the available places had to be allocated across the various degree programmes. Ultimately, 15 students representing 10 different degree programmes from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences took part.

Whilst Storm Xaver was wreaking havoc outside that evening, the students listened attentively to the presentations by Katharina Brinkmann (HR), Helena Persson (Sourcing Unit Implementor) and Björn Gelhorn (Autonomous Maintenance Implementation Assistant), who outlined Unilever’s business activities and, in particular, those of the site.

Following the brief company presentation, the three guided the group of students through the individual production areas, enabling them to follow the manufacturing process for the various products – from the delivery of raw materials right through to filling and onward transport by lorry.

Afterwards, the students had to roll up their sleeves themselves in small teams and bake the biscuits. Despite the large number of people, the organisation in the kitchen ran very smoothly, so that just as the pizza order arrived, the last tray of biscuits was taken out of the oven.

During the group dinner, career opportunities at Unilever were presented and any remaining questions were answered.

With a bag full of biscuits and plenty of interesting insights into the Rama Cremefine production process, the students then headed home – and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive!
