Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, has awarded Professor Dr Andy Stamm, Professor of Electronics and Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Technology and Bionics, the title of Honorary Professor (Adjunct Professor).
Professor Stamm received the award in recognition of his commitment and collaboration with Griffith University. In Australia, the title of Adjunct Professor is awarded to researchers who have achieved particular success in academia or industry and who also maintain close ties with the Australian university. It is regarded as the highest honour for external academics.
As a PhD student, Professor Stamm spent three and a half years at Griffith University conducting research into freestyle swimming – specifically, the measurement of swimming speed and distance using accelerometers – and completed his PhD there. Following his appointment at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in January 2015, he remained affiliated with the Australian university as an Adjunct Research Fellow. In Australia, such a fellowship is awarded to academics on an honorary basis to recognise their connection to and commitment to a university.
For example, Professor Stamm supervised a student from Griffith University on his final-year project entitled ‘Battery Monitoring System with Weather Prediction’ as part of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Electronics at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences. In addition, he arranged for one student to undertake a work placement semester and another to carry out his Bachelor’s thesis at the Australian university. Both were enrolled on the Mechatronics Systems Engineering programme.
