Your exam period – everything at a glance
Here you’ll find all the key examination dates – clearly laid out and easy to find, so you can get through your examinations with peace of mind.
Note: Further details regarding your examinations – such as times, examination formats or permitted aids – will be published by your faculty before the start of the examination period. Please note that deadlines for submitting coursework, projects or essays may also fall outside the examination period.
As part of your degree programme, you can undertake either an internship semester or a semester abroad. Both options offer you the opportunity to build on the knowledge you have gained during your studies and to gain practical or international experience.
Internship semester at home or abroad
During the Internship semester, you will work in a company or another suitable organisation. This allows you to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during your studies in a practical setting and gain initial insights into your future career field.
The internship semester offers you the opportunity to:
- gain practical work experience
- apply the theoretical knowledge gained during your studies
- gain an insight into business processes
- make contacts for your future career
Semester abroad
As an alternative to the Internship semester, you can spend a semester studying at a university abroad.
Studying abroad allows you to:
- to deepen your specialist knowledge in your field of study
- to develop intercultural skills
- gain international study experience
- improve your language skills
You can find further information on studying abroad here:
Entry requirements
You may be admitted to the practical or study abroad semester if the following requirements are met:
- You have earned the required credits before the start of the semester.
- You will be supervised by a lecturer during the semester.
- You have found a suitable placement or host university.
You are responsible for finding the placement yourself. There is no entitlement to the allocation of a placement.
The supervising professor will decide whether the placement is suitable.
It is recommended that you contact professors at an early stage to arrange supervision.
Registration
Once you have met all the requirements and found a placement or host university, you can register for your placement or study abroad semester.
You can submit the “Application for Admission to the Practical Training/Study Abroad Semester” online via the following link:

Withdrawal of topic
You may withdraw your topic only once and only within the first four weeks after the deadline begins – without giving reasons.
Extension
of writing time The time allowed for final theses is specified in the General Examination Regulations (RPO) and, where applicable, the relevant Examination regulations.
Example: A Bachelor’s thesis in a full-time undergraduate programme has a time limit of three months.
An extension of up to four weeks may only be granted upon a justified application to the chair of the Examination Board – illness or inability to sit the Examination due to illness do not count as valid reasons (Section 188 of the German Civil Code (BGB)). In such cases, only withdrawal from the Examination is possible.
Submission of the thesis
Your thesis must be submitted in full and on time (Section 188 BGB) – in duplicate in printed form to the Examination Services and electronically (PDF) via SharePoint:
https://sharepoint.hochschule-rhein-waal.de/sites/Abschlussarbeit
To meet the deadline, either the electronic version or the printed copies are sufficient. The other format may be submitted later. Submission is only considered complete once both are available in full.
For postal submissions:
- The postmark must be dated no later than the last day of the submission deadline.
- Keep the proof of posting (date + signature).
Postal addresses:
- Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Examination Services (Building 20), Marie-Curie-Str. 1, 47533 Kleve
- Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Examination Services (Building 4), Friedrich-Heinrich-Allee 25, 47475 Kamp-Lintfort
If you are unable to submit your thesis during opening hours, please place it in an envelope and post it in the deadline-compliant postbox outside Building 4.
Please note:
If the submission deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the next working day is considered the deadline.
Don’t forget: Each copy must contain an original, signed declaration of originality.
Withdrawal from an examination, discontinuation of an examination and inability to sit an examination
You can withdraw from an exam without giving a reason – generally no later than 7 days before the exam date (Section 15(6) RPO).
The easiest way to do this is via HISinONE; alternatively, you can do so in writing.
Example: If your exam is on Friday, you can withdraw by midnight on the Thursday of the previous week.
Important:
- Withdrawal does not count as an exam attempt
- If the online withdrawal does not work, contact the Examination Service immediately
- Withdrawal is not possible if you are required to sit the exam in accordance with Section 15(9) of the RPO
Once the withdrawal deadline has passed, the following applies:
if you fail to attend without a valid reason, withdraw from the examination or fail to submit your work by the deadline, the examination will be marked as 5.0 (fail) (Section 13(1) RPO).
If you have been admitted but are no longer able to withdraw within the deadline, you may only withdraw for a valid reason.
If you are unable to attend for a valid reason (e.g. illness), you must report this immediately and provide evidence (§ 13(2) RPO).
