To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls on 25 November, Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences once again took part in the global ‘Orange your City’ campaign, thereby taking a stand against violence against girls and women.
Last night, the Lower Rhine was lit up in orange – as were parts of Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. Through this lighting campaign, towns and local authorities, as well as numerous institutions and businesses, are joining forces with the project’s initiator, the ‘Zonta Club Niederrhein’, to raise awareness of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls. The message: a clear “No!” to violence against women and girls.
“At Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, we stand for respectful coexistence, which is why it was important to us to take part in the lighting campaign again this year,” said the university’s gender equality team. “Violence against girls and women remains one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. Especially now, during the coronavirus pandemic, the right to a self-determined life is under threat for many women and girls.”
Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is taking part for the third time in the global ‘Orange the World’ lighting campaign organised by UN Women and ZONTA. Among other locations, the crane on the Spoy Canal at the Kleve campus and buildings on the Kamp-Lintfort campus will be illuminated in orange daily from 5 pm until 10 December. Members of the public can also support the campaign by displaying an orange light themselves or wearing an orange scarf until the campaign ends on 10 December.
