FAQ for prospective students

Are you looking for the right degree programme?
On our website, you’ll find an overview of all our degree programmes (full-time, dual or part-time). Read the descriptions carefully to get a good idea of what each programme involves.

Still unsure? No problem. You can apply for several Degree programmes. If you’re offered a place, you can get advice on campus and then decide.

Bachelor’s degree programmes usually start in the Winter semester only.
Master’s degree programmes usually start in both the summer and winter semesters.

You can find all current deadlines in the ‘Semester Dates and Deadlines’ section.

The deadlines will be published as soon as the Application portal opens.
Important: Deadlines are subject to change. Please check our website regularly.

That depends on where you obtained your University entrance qualification (UEQ):

• In Germany: Apply via the university’s application portal.
• Abroad: Apply via uni-assist.

The flowchart will help you find your way around.

No.
The online application is sufficient.

You do not need to send any documents by post to the university or to uni-assist.

For bachelor’s degree programmes:

• Open admission: You will receive immediate confirmation of admission via the portal.
• Restricted admission: Notifications are usually sent out at the beginning of August.

For Master’s programmes:

• Open admission: You will receive a decision once your documents have been examined.
• Restricted admission: There is a selection process. You will then receive your decision.

If applying via uni-assist:
Your application will be forwarded to the university after Examination.
The decision is made by the university.

The process may take some time. Please be patient.

Once you have received your admission, you can apply for your visa (if necessary).

Did you apply by the deadline but haven’t heard anything yet?

Then there are still opportunities:

• Process of assigning open slots to waitlisted candidates
• Lottery

These take place if there are still places available.
Rejection letters will only be sent out afterwards.

Once you have submitted your online application, you will receive a notification.

If you are accepted, the letter will state the deadline for enrolment.

You will also receive a leaflet. This will list the documents you need.
You can simply upload these documents via the Application portal.

In principle, you can undertake enrolment for several degree programmes.

However: degree programmes are structured in such a way that they are coordinated in terms of timing and content.
Studying two programmes in parallel is therefore often difficult.

Important: As a rule, you cannot undertake enrolment in two degree programmes with restricted admission at the same time.

Have you been offered a place but would like to do voluntary service (e.g. FSJ or BFD)?

In that case, your place at university will initially lapse.

However: You can reapply with priority afterwards.
This applies to the next two allocation rounds following your voluntary service.

Important:

• Keep your Letter of Admission safe
• State your voluntary service in your new application
• Upload a certificate

If your degree programme requires a Basic intership, you do not need to have completed this before you start your studies.

You can also do it during your studies, for example during the lecture-free period.

Important:
You must submit proof of this by the time you undergo re-registration for a new semester at the latest.

Allow plenty of time, as the Examination and approval process may take a while.

Your basic intership must be relevant to your Degree programme.

You can complete it at a suitable company.

Have you already completed an internship?
If so, you can check whether it will be recognised.

To do this, submit your documents to the Dean's Office of your faculty.
If you have any questions, the Head of Degree Programme will be happy to help.

Do you need a visa to study in Germany?

You can find important information on the websites of the immigration offices for the districts of Kleve and Wesel.
These explain how the visa process works and what you need to bear in mind.

As a guest auditor, you can attend individual lectures. You will be required to pay a fee for this.

Important:

• you cannot sit Examinations
• you cannot obtain a degree
• you will not receive BAföG
• you will not receive a Germany Semester Ticket

Guest student status has no bearing on your application for a standard degree programme.
Admission as a guest student is granted upon application.

Are you already studying at another university in Germany?

If so, you can register as a visiting student.

This means:

• you can attend courses
• you can also sit Examinations

However: You will not receive a Deutschlandsemesterticket.

Admission is granted upon application.

Once you arrive in Kleve or Kamp-Lintfort, there are a few important steps to take:

1. Registering with the Residents’ Registration Office
You must register after moving in. This applies to everyone in Germany.
If you move house, you must also re-register.

2. Open
a bank account You’ll need a current account for rent and other payments.

You can open one at a bank, a savings bank or the post office.
Many banks offer special terms for students.

You will need:

• your passport or ID card
• your Proof of enrolment
• your registration certificate

3. Apply
for a residence permit Did you enter the country on a visa?

Then you must apply for a residence permit.
To do this, go to the relevant Immigration office.
